About Magyarázva

Magyarázva ("explained") is a free, English-language reference to Hungarian grammar. It exists because learners of Hungarian deserve explanations as clear and complete as those available for Spanish or German, and those are hard to find online.

Who it is for

• English speakers learning Hungarian on their own, in a course or with a tutor.
• People with Hungarian family who want to understand the language they half-remember.
• Anyone living in or moving to Hungary who wants to know why things are said the way they are.
• Teachers looking for clear tables and example sets to point students to.

What we try to do differently

• Explain the logic, not just list forms. Rules are stated so that you can apply them to words you have never seen.
• Name the exceptions. Where Hungarian is irregular or where speakers vary, we say so instead of hiding it.
• Show real Hungarian. Examples are natural, standard sentences, with translations that reflect meaning rather than word order.
• Link everything. Each guide connects to the rules it depends on, so you can fill gaps as you go.
• Tools that show their working. Our tools explain each result and flag when a form must be memorised.

How the site is organised

Guides are grouped into Basics, Cases, Verbs, Everyday Hungarian and Comparisons. Each section page suggests an order of study. The glossary defines grammatical terms in plain English, and the FAQ collects short answers to common questions.

Accuracy and corrections

Our process for checking content is described in the editorial standards, and the reference works we use are listed on the sources page. If you find an error, the corrections page explains how to report it and how we handle fixes.

Independence

Magyarázva is independent. It is not affiliated with any school, publisher or government body, and it does not accept payment to recommend courses or books. Any resources mentioned on the site are mentioned because they are useful to learners.
